Notes on Using CategoriesSubmitted by Jean E. Gazis on Tue, 2007-04-24 17:31.
I thought it might be helpful to outline some ways Drupal's categories can be used so you can think about how you want to do it as you develop content. For my portfolio site, I have set up two "vocabularies" - Portfolio and Topic. Under Portfolio I have types of work examples I might post: Ad, Article, Direct Mail, Newsletter, Sales Collateral, Website, Print, and Other. Under Topic I have things I may blog about: Design, Funny, Opinion, Personal, Reading, Pet Peeves, Useful Stuff, Words, Work, Writing. For either of these lists, multiple terms can be chosen, but there is only one layer, no sub-terms. For my camping site, I have a more complex setup: there are several vocabularies like this:
Again, any post can have multiple terms from each of these, but there aren't sub-terms. Another example is the WebHostNy site, where the Site Directory page consists of category names such as Service Alerts and Hosting Info. Clicking on any term brings up all content tagged with that term. (You can also do this by clicking on the term where it appears in the heading of each post.) ( categories: )
